Separation Of Salt and Sand By Filtration Nikki Plack 10-13-15 pd.11 Abstract It is hypothesized that using filtration and evaporation, the correct mass percent of a sand/salt mixture can be determined. Introduction Matter can be classified into two categories, a pure substance or a mixture. Then pure substances and mixtures can be broken down into more specific classifications. If matter is classified as a mixture then that means that it is made up of 2 or more compounds physically joined together. The physical change in a mixture denotes that the chemical identity was not changed. An example of this would be an ice cube melting into water. If matter is classified as a pure substance it has 2 or more elements chemically joined together creating only 1 type of atom or molecule. For example Cu only contains copper atoms. The proportions of a mixture can vary like a 14 karat gold ring, it is made up of 58.3% gold and 41.7% zinc and silver . These variables can change, for example if the gold were to made stronger the percentage of the zinc and silver would become higher and the percentage of the gold lower. Compared to a pure substance where the proportions will constantly be the sam e, such as CO2 , it will always contain one carbon atom and two oxygen atoms, a 1:2 ratio.
